Baroque Music Montana Concert

Sweet Grass Arts Theater
Tickets $20 at the door Cash or Check
Baroque Music Montana presents “Hymn of Thanksgiving: Beethoven’s Quartet Op 132,” with a period instrument string quartet. One of his final works, Beethoven composed this piece upon recovery from an assumed fatal illness, entitling it ‘a prayer from a convalescent to the Deity.’ Principally inspired by the renaissance composer Palestrina, Beethoven uses ancient harmonies, imitation, and organ-like writing to invoke the archaic church and holy reverence. Beethoven’s final string quartets are profound, transcendent works that revolutionized chamber music with unparalleled musical ingenuity, complexity, and emotional depth. Written when he was deaf, they are perhaps chamber music’s most revered works.
Musicians for this program include Los Angeles-based Andrew McIntosh, a Grammy-nominated violinist, violist, and composer, with compositional commissions from the LA Philharmonic and performances at Walt Disney hall to Miller Theatre and National Sawdust in NYC to Tectonics Festival Glasgow in Scotland. He is Professor at the California Institute of the Arts and a founding member of Wild Up, the Formalist Quartet, and Wadada Leo Smith’s Red Koral Quartet.
Violinist Carrie Krause resides in Bozeman as concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony and artistic director of Baroque Music Montana. She has recently performed at St. Martin’s in the Fields in London, Utrecht Early Music Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and attended The Juilliard School.
Violist Maureen Murchie, concertmaster of the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Handel and Haydn Society in Boston, baroque and contemporary orchestras of Trinity Wall Street, Mark Morris Dance Company, Harry Connick Jr., El Mundo

Bruce Molsky is “one of America’s premier fiddling talents” (Mother Jones) and a twiceGrammy-nominated artist on fiddle, banjo, guitar and song. He has dug into the deepest reaches of mountain music, while growing his own unique voice. Bruce holds a stage as few other musicians can. His skill at performing a deep and varied repertoire and a reverence for the past, combined with a relaxed, conversational wit, draws listeners in as if they were sitting on the front porch of Carnegie Hall. The result has landed him in collaborations with some of the most highly respected players in the world, from roots to rock. Molsky is a guest on legendary guitarist Mark Knopfler’s latest CD, Tracker, playing banjo, fiddle and guitar. His collaboration with Anonymous 4, 1865 – Songs of Hope and Home from the American Civil War, was on the top 10 Billboard charts for weeks. Molsky frequently joins genre-busting supergroups, like Andy Irvine’s Mozaik, with Celtic giant Donal Lunny, and he has been featured on BBC TV Transatlantic Sessions singing with Joan Osborne, Julie Fowlis and fiddling with Scottish legend Aly Bain and America’s great dobroist Jerry Douglas. Molsky was recently named by Berklee College of Music as its Visiting Scholar in the American Roots Music Program. Through his work there, he is a mentor, friend, and inspiration for the next generation of roots musicians. "Bruce Molsky is one of those great players who 'gets it': has all the links to the past but is happy not to be chained to it" - Mark Knopfler "Molsky is easily one of the nation's most talented fiddlers...he transports you ... geographically, historically, and most of all emotionally" - Mother Jones "It is no exaggeration to say that Bruce Molsky is one of the greatest American fiddlers of all time. His playing is mesmerizing and transporting, and best experienced live" - WBUR (Boston NPR) "An absolute master" - No Depression "An incredible power of history and tradition in his vocal" - Linda Ronstadt "One of the world's premier Appalachian-style fiddlers" - Bloomberg News "A mystical awareness of how to bring out the new in something that is old" - Mark O'Connor

BIG BAND BENEFIT DANCE
Saturday, July 27th, 2024 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Sweet Grass County American Legion (Upstairs)
Featuring the Hanger Band.
In the fall of 2020, several Covid weary musicians started meeting every other
Monday evening in an airplane hangar in Columbus. Why a hangar? They could
socially distance. The airplane was pushed out of the hangar and chairs and
stands set up. The few dedicated musicians grew in number as folks traveled from
Hardin, Wyoming, Red Lodge, Big Timber, etc. The 17-piece Hangar Band was
official. After several months of practicing, there arose the natural inclination to
play this fun dance music for someone other than themselves. They play big band
music from many genres that include new recent jazz arrangements and ranging
back to original big band tunes from the 1930’s.
These dedicated musicians are happy to take time away from their busy summer
schedules volunteering to come, play and support the local Big Timber arts.
